- Age Policy and Minor Travel Guidelines
For the safety and comfort of all guests, travelers under 21 years of age must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or chaperone who is at least 21 years old. One adult chaperone is required for every five guests under the age of 21. Alcoholic beverages are not served to guests under 21 in accordance with maritime regulations.
Due to limited onboard medical facilities, reservations are not accepted for infants younger than six months on non-Transocean sailings or younger than 12 months on Transocean sailings at the time the cruise begins. - Travel Requirements for Minors
Minors under 18 traveling internationally must be accompanied by both parents or carry a notarized consent letter from the non-traveling parent(s). If one parent is deceased or the child has only one legal parent, appropriate notarized documentation is required. These measures support international regulations aimed at preventing child abduction and may be enforced at ports of entry or departure. Having proper documentation readily available can help ensure smooth travel.
Parents, guardians, and chaperones are fully responsible for the supervision and conduct of minors at all times. Children may not be left unattended onboard and must be supervised in the same manner as they would be at a large resort or theme park. For safety and liability reasons, all guests under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian during shore excursions. - Minors Going Ashore
Parents and guardians are responsible for determining whether minors under 16 may go ashore without adult supervision. Permission must be arranged in advance with the ship’s Security Officer so the approval can be recorded in the gangway control system. Without this authorization, minors are generally not permitted to disembark without an accompanying adult. Ultimate responsibility for a minor’s actions remains with their parent or guardian.

Fuel Surcharge Policy
Holland America Line has eliminated fuel surcharges on all cruise voyages, providing guests with greater transparency and value when booking their cruise vacation. For reservations that fall within the final payment period, any previously applied fuel supplement will be returned to guests as a shipboard credit. For bookings made outside the final payment period, the fuel surcharge will be removed entirely, and guests will receive an updated final payment amount reflecting the adjustment.
Holland America Line reserves the right to reinstate a fuel supplement should global fuel costs significantly increase. A fuel surcharge may be reintroduced if the price of light sweet crude oil, as listed on the NYMEX, rises above $70 per barrel.
Payments / Refunds
- Deposit Requirements
A cruise deposit is required to secure your Holland America Line reservation and is typically due within one to five days of booking. The exact per-person, per-cruise deposit amount will be confirmed at the time of reservation. Guests booked on Grand Voyages are required to submit an additional deposit.
Holland America Line’s Cancellation Protection Plan (CPP) may be purchased at the time the deposit is made or anytime before cancellation penalties begin. Since cancellation timelines vary by itinerary, guests are encouraged to review the applicable cruise brochure or visit the official Holland America Line website. Once purchased, CPP fees are non-refundable. - Final Payment Information
Final payment for most Holland America Line cruises is generally due no later than 75 days prior to departure, though certain sailings may require earlier payment. Guests should refer to their specific cruise documentation for exact final payment deadlines.
Once full payment is received and online check-in is completed, cruise travel documents will become available approximately 50 days before sailing. Travel documents are issued only after final payment has been successfully processed. - Accepted Forms of Payment
Holland America Line accepts American Express, Visa, MasterCard, and Discover. Guests paying by check are encouraged to include their confirmation number for faster processing. Travel agents should note that MCOS payments are not accepted. Guests and agents outside the U.S. and Canada should submit payment via wire transfer or credit card. - Refund Policy
Refunds, excluding Cancellation Protection Plan payments, are processed in accordance with Holland America Line’s cancellation schedule and apply only to written cancellation requests received prior to travel commencement by air, rail, sea, or land.
Bookings made under 100% non-refundable promotional fares are not eligible for any refund, credit, or compensation once payment is made. Cancellation fees cannot be applied toward future bookings. Refunds are typically issued to the original travel professional, and additional agency-imposed fees may apply.
Cruise reservations are non-transferable. Any name changes or departure date changes require prior approval and are treated as cancellations, subject to applicable penalties. - Holland America Line Cancellation Fees

Smoking Policy
Holland America Line maintains a primarily smoke-free environment throughout its ships to ensure guest comfort and safety. At this time, all indoor public areas are designated non-smoking, with limited exceptions noted below.

It also includes travel insurance benefits such as trip interruption and delay coverage, medical expense protection, emergency evacuation, baggage coverage, and 24-hour worldwide emergency assistance.

Tipping Policy
Holland America Line’s Crew Appreciation charge is a daily gratuity automatically added to your onboard account to recognize the dedicated team members who deliver exceptional service throughout your cruise. This daily amount is pooled and shared across the crew, ensuring all behind-the-scenes and guest-facing staff are rewarded for enhancing your onboard experience. Guests may adjust the daily amount at their discretion during the voyage.
For sailings departing before February 14, 2024, as well as the 2024 Grand World Voyage and 2024 Grand Australia & New Zealand Voyage, the daily Crew Appreciation is $16.00 USD per guest, per day for non-suite staterooms and $17.50 USD per guest, per day for suite accommodations.
For sailings departing on or after February 14, 2024, the daily Crew Appreciation increases to $17.00 USD per guest, per day for non-suite staterooms and $19.00 USD per guest, per day for suite guests.
In addition, an 18% service charge is automatically applied to beverage purchases, bar retail items, specialty dining cover charges, à la carte menu items, and Spa & Salon services. Local taxes may apply where required.
